Do the GSCC write to previous employers?

I have currently been offered a place to study BA Social Work starting Sept2011. Obviously as a student you have to register with the GSCC, however it is asking for a full 10 year work history. I don't really want them to write to a certain employer, due to leaving on bad terms. Do they write to them for references or is it just formality?
